Why Ethiopia?
Because the journey is not simply about visiting another country. It is about reconnecting with a history that helps us understand the African roots of our faith and imagine its future. Ethiopia is a particularly meaningful setting for PAPC 2027 because its history connects directly with the conference theme, “From the Plantation Back to Aksum: Reclaiming the Deep African Roots of Black Faith.”
Here are three reasons why:
- An ancient African Christian heritage: Ethiopia has a Christian tradition dating to the early centuries of Christianity, long before the transatlantic slave trade. Its history challenges the idea that Christianity in Africa began with European missionary activity.
- Aksum and African history: The ancient Kingdom of Aksum was one of Africa’s significant civilizations. Its history provides a powerful setting for exploring African identity, faith, and historical memory.
- A place for reflection and renewal: Visiting Ethiopia creates an opportunity for pastors, scholars, theologians, and church leaders to engage with African Christian heritage and consider its significance for contemporary Black faith and global Pentecostalism.
